The appearance of «dry» trees in rubber plantations and the development of Tapping Panel Dryness has been the subject of a considerable number of studies. The original causes of the disease have yet to be identified. Genetic factors at molecular level in the latex producing tissues determine susceptibility to tapping panel dryness. An experimental approach involves two-dimensional electrophoresis to detect any newly or overexpressed proteins in the latex of diseased trees. The results presented show that it is possible to characterize trees affected by tapping panel dryness by detecting the corresponding protein markers in their latex.

Three trials have been set up in Côte d’Ivoire to analyse the growth of six-year-old microcuttings produced from seedlings, 45-month-old somatic embryos of PB 260 and PR 107 and 31-month-old microcuttings of IRCA 18. The results show that Hevea in vitro plantlets produced by somatic embryogenesis or microcutting consistently grow as well as if not better than conventional budded plants. The dif...
